The Third Sector in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross
The Third Sector is a term used to describe a range of organisations including charities, voluntary groups, sports clubs and not-for-profit companies.
As a rural delivery partner for the Highland Third Sector Interface (HTSI), Skye and Lochalsh CVO are funded to improve the understanding of the third sector in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross.
To do this we work close with many groups through 1:1 support, forums and events. To support this we have developed a database to record third sector organisations in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross. Data has been taken from OSCR and Companies House, SLCVO’s members database and the Skye and Lochalsh Health and Well-being Directory. We use the database to:
-
Identify organisations to participate in community planning and co-production processes
-
Develop profiles of the Third Sector in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross
-
Target TSI support services to where they are most needed.

The third sector in Sky, Lochalsh and Wester Ross play a vital role in supporting some of the most rural and remote communities in Scotland.
The Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross area has 31 Community Councils supporting a population of around 20,000 people. The area is predominantly made up of small rural townships, with 38% of the population living within one of the four National Records of Scotland defined settlements of Ullapool, Broadford, Kyle of Lochalsh and Portree. (Note a settlement is defined as group of high density postcodes whose combined population is 500 or more)

In March 2021 we recorded 416 third sector organisations operating across the area. Of these, 272 were registered charities and almost 50% classified as small unincorporated groups. They deliver a wide range of services from law and advocacy support to recreational and sports activities.
