The Third Sector 

Skye, Lochalsh, Wester Ross

The Third Sector is a term used to describe a range of organisations including charities, voluntary groups, sports clubs and not-for-profit companies. 

Understanding the Impact and Diversity of the Third Sector

The Third Sector play a vital role in supporting communities across Sky, Lochalsh and Wester Ross. Third Sector organisations deliver essential services that help to improve people's wellbeing and contribute to economic growth.

 

To support the Third Sector, the Scottish Government fund Third sector interfaces (TSIs) to provide a single point of access for support and advice within each local authority area in Scotland. As a rural delivery partner for the Highland Third Sector Interface, Skye and Lochalsh CVO have four core delivery outcomes:

  1. The understanding of the impact and diversity of activity delivered by the Third Sector in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross will be improved.

  2. Influence and impact on policy and decisions in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross will be expanded and developed from common sector-wide based understanding

  3. Opportunities for collaboration, networking and co-production will be improved and expanded

  4. Third Sector organisations in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross will better informed of opportunities for development, engagement and influence

To improve the understanding and impact of the local Third Sector we have developed a database to record Third Sector Organisations in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross. Data has been taken from OSCR and Companies House, SLCVO’s members database and the Skye and Lochalsh Health and Well-being Directory. This information is used to:

  • Identify organisations that can bring their experience and expertise to community planning and co-production processes.

  • Develop profiles of the Third Sector in Skye, Lochalsh and Wester Ross

  • Target our services to where they are most needed.

The Local Third Sector

The 2020/21 Data extracts from OSR, Companies House, SLVO members database and Skye and Lochalsh Health and Well-being Directory have identified 416 Third Sector organisations operating across the area. This however, is not the full picture as many Third Sector organisations are small voluntary groups not registered with OSCR or Companies House.

To help connect people and communities to groups in Skye and Lochalsh we have developed a Skye and Lochalsh Health and Well-being Directory that can be downloaded here. In 2021 we will update this to include information about health and well-being groups providing services in Wester Ross.
