Health & Social Care Services in Skye & Lochalsh
Access Panel
The Access Panel was established approx 9 years ago. It consists entirely of volunteers, a large percentage of whom are registered disabled or have family members within this category. Others on the Committee have a range of expertise in a variety of fields.
The initial primary remit was to ensure a barrier free environment whereby all members of the local community can access buildings, services and information irrespective of any individual impairment.
A key essential element to enable a fulfillment of these objectives was to establish a close working relationship with all relevant bodies, for example the Highland Council, the NHS and various other agencies. Over the years, this cooperation has proved to be very successful in resolving numerous issues.
The Access Panel aims to work with people by listening, discussing ideas, offering advice, giving appropriate information and promoting good practice. The Panel endeavors to monitor all matters of business it deems to require remedial action whilst conforming to the compliance as defined within the appropriate section of legislation specified in the Disability Discrimination Act 1995.
Membership of the Access Panel is open to any interested person in the wider community who accepts the constitution.

Advocacy Highland
Advocacy Highland helps people to speak up, speak out and be heard.
Advocacy is standing up for a person, sticking with them and being on their side.
Advocacy Highland works with people who have mental health problems, including dementia; those with learning disabilities, older people and children so that they are listened to and respected, involved in making decisions about their care and treatment and are able to contribute to and participate in society.
These groups of people are among the most vulnerable, and advocacy aims to redress the balance between service providers and those receiving the services by working alongside a person, enabling them to gain access to information, explore and understand their options and to make their views and wishes heard.
Advocacy Highland also speaks on behalf of people who are unable to do so for themselves, upholding their rights.
People can refer themselves or anyone else can refer them with their permission.
Trained advocates can then meet the person at e.g. a café or drop-in centre or at the person’s home if they are unable to meet elsewhere.
The advocate takes time to get to know the person, to understand their issues and concerns, then works with the person to take the issue forward in a way that helps the person take control of the situation.
This might be done by e.g. helping them to prepare personal statements about how they would like to be looked after, going along with them to meetings, or by helping them to access support and advice services.
The service is free and confidential, and is independent of the statutory services.

Befrienders Highland
Befriending is simply a supported friendship between 2 people: a volunteer befriender and someone who has experienced mental health problems and is isolated or feels alone. Befriending provides safe, reliable, 1-1 friendly contact that brings companionship, interest and fun. The Distance Befriending service from Befrienders Highland provides people living in isolated areas someone to talk to, even if they live hundreds of miles away. Any adult (+ 18 years) in the Highland area who has experienced a mental health problem can be befriended. Befrienders are ordinary friendly people who have been carefully selected and trained to ensure acceptance, reliability, safety and confidentiality within the relationship.
Volunteers with the Highland-wide service offer their friendship to vulnerable people in isolated rural areas by phone, letter or e-mail. People are carefully matched for gender, age, interests and compatibility before they are introduced. The friendship is regularly supported by the staff to ensure that both people are at ease and are enjoying their relationship.

ME Highland Support
As a long-time sufferer, now much recovered, I feel I can perhaps help someone who has recently been diagnosed (or their carer) by answering their questions from my experience. Depending on where they live and how they might like to communicate, I can put them in touch with self-help groups or national bodies, from whom they can obtain further information. Sometimes people prefer to talk in the first instance to someone who is geographically nearer, rather than to someone hundreds of miles away.
I can be contacted by phone (from late morning onwards!) or by e-mail and would normally respond within a few days, depending on whether I am at home or not.

Counselling is not about giving advice and does not necessarily provide quick and easy answers. Counselling is based on listening and enabling you to make sense of the difficulties you may be experiencing. This may include;
- Anxiety or stress - Bereavement or loss
- Depression - Anger management
- Emotional, physical or sexual abuse, past or present - Feelings of hurt, rejection or neglect
- Marriage / relationship difficulties - Vague feelings of unease
- Poor self image / low self esteem - Family breakdown
- Wish for change
Counselling provides an opportunity to talk in confidence with a person outside your situation. It allows space for you to explore thoughts and feelings and, most importantly, allows time for you to concentrate on your needs.
You can access the service directly or professionals and other agencies can refer clients to the service. You can contact the service by phone; please leave a message if the answerphone is on, as we may not answer the phone when we are seeing clients, or you can contact us by letter or email.
The Counselling Service will meet you for an initial visit and if you and the counsellor think that the service would be helpful to you, you will be offered an initial series of six sessions, lasting 50-60 minutes. You may be seen at Kyleakin, in Portree and at outreach locations on the West Coast.
No fee is charged but NCS is a charity and relies on donations from clients and friends to continue the service.

Parenting Counts
The mission statement for Parenting Counts is confident, positive children through confident, positive parenting.
Parenting Counts is an umbrella organisation that is parent/guardian led. By seeking funding it aims to support parents and guardians in their parenting role by strengthening and developing existing groups and establishing new ones. These local groups will provide support, personal development, exchange of skills and knowledge, training, networking and group mentoring to all interested parents and guardians.
If anyone is interested in setting up a group they should contact Aileen Turnbull (see contact details below).
The group that meets at Auchtertyre (at present the only one in Skye and Lochalsh) is called PG Tips (stands for Parenting Group Tips) and meets on the third Friday of each month from 9.30am - 11.30am in the Community Education Centre. Skye and Lochalsh Mental Health Association
Am Fasgadh is a drop-in centre for anyone experiencing problems because of their mental health. We don’t do therapy or counselling and our staff isn’t clinically qualified – it’s about friendship and support. The key is providing a homely atmosphere where people who might otherwise be isolated feel a sense of ownership and belonging. Informality is very important and the centre doesn’t feel like a “normal” mental health service. We have an open door policy and don’t categorise people according to their illness or keep any files or notes about our members.
There are many ways of using the centre. Some people just want time out to have a coffee in peace. Others are looking for advice on difficult problems, or simply someone who’ll listen in confidence. We often help with forms, phone calls and budgeting or come to appointments or meetings when someone wants some support. The centre is open 365 days a year. Every day we serve a high quality main meal at a cost of just £1.85. We understand that there are good days and bad days and we’ll try to provide whatever help we can.
Kyleakin Hall Outreach Project is an outreach service based in Kyleakin Village Hall. This meets every Friday and aims to provide the same service as Am Fasgadh.
Am Fasgadh is open: Monday 9am - 5pm Tuesday 12pm - 8pm Wednesday 9am - 5pm Thursday 12pm - 8pm Friday 9am - 5pm Saturday 11am - 3pm Sunday 11am - 3pm

The group has in the past set up summer playscheme activities for the children, because of the limited activities provided by Highland Council, and lobbied for a local respite unit for the children.

Viewfield Garden Collective
The Garden Collective was established in July 2006 with the objectives of creating, restoring and maintaining a piece of overgrown and disused land for the benefit of the whole community, but in particular to help people who are vulnerable through mental ill health or disability to enjoy participating in an outdoor, healthy activity, which is long term and beneficial therapeutically. Nine out of ten people with mental health issues do not go out or apply for jobs, due to the stigma associated with their condition. Reactive depression affects a high percentage of unemployed people, so by providing an activity that is valuable and useful to the whole community, people can be helped and supported to find their voice and achieve some self-esteem.
Since the project started, a path has been built restoring an old right of way from the village of Portree up on to the hill and forestry. The first stage of this path is accessible for wheelchair users and the second section for people with restricted mobility but who are ambulant. The area is used frequently by visitors and locals alike. Work is now commencing on the garden which consists of 3 terraces, which will be restored to soft fruit, trees, vegetables and a scented flower garden.
A group of 6 to 8 people regularly attend once or twice a week – mixed ages and abilities. The project aims to give volunteers and trainees meaningful work and training in path-building and horticulture. Raised beds are being created in the garden for each individual to use as they please, like a small allotment.
The Collective aims to provide a space which is safe and private, but also accessible for those with diminished mobility. It is also hoped to provide volunteering opportunities for people who may have early dementia, or the elderly and infirm who may need some occupation to give their lives more value.
At present work in the garden is just on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Wednesday is supervised and for people just starting, Thursdays is for volunteers who can work unsupervised, but any work in the garden must be by prior arrangement with the Collective.
The garden is situated in the grounds of Viewfield House, Viewfield road, Portree – entrance just opposite the Portree Filling Station. Access to the garden is through Skye Shrubs car park.
