Broadford Youth Club

Our aim is to offer the opportunity for personal and social development for the young people in the South of Skye and Lochalsh. The Youth Club helps the youngsters achieve their personal potential, it aids them grow as individuals, become responsible members of the community and gives opportunities to extend their horizons.
A great team of volunteers, senior youth volunteers, and a Highland Council Youth Worker, Nicholas Kelly, (all volunteers have Highland Council Disclosure) have developed the Youth Club from a mere dozen to over 60 members in 4 years

Broadford Youth Club sports

We now have two sessions a week at the Broadford Village Hall for Secondary school pupils - on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Wednesday Night 4.30-7pm: Sports Session
The boys have an hour & half of Football Training. Our senior school pupils and school leavers run these sessions as part of their individual Youth Achievement Award. We have several teams in local leagues, Under 14s (coached by Jamie Graham & Callum Mattinson), Under 17s (run by the team) and during the summer we run two Soccer 7’s teams for primary age pupils. These teams are trained by seniors Martin Mackinnon & Connaire Yoxon. Nicholas supervises all football training session and league games.
Our teams have achieved success well over the past couple of years. Our U17's came first in their league and our U14's second in theirs, and our soccer 7s A-team 3rd. We receive great support from local businesses: Mackinnon Ground Works, Adam Macdonald Builders, and Neil Macleod Builders for sponsorship of each team. Thank you very much.
For girls we offer an hour of different sports & dance. The girl’s sports session is new and is in its second year. Initially these sessions were run by Sarah Corrigal. Sarah plays many sports; Football and Shinty are her main sports. She has now left school and is studying a degree in Sports Development at College. She is greatly missed by the girls.
The sessions, with a variety of sports including footy, uni hock, basketball, badminton, are now run by Nicholas and volunteer mums. We are looking for a young enthusiastic female volunteer to continue the sports session with the girls. We have plans to offer a variety of dance session with Skye Dance workers. The Girls did well last year with their team winning the Youth Highland Girls junior footy competitions in Inverness.

Fun run with Broadford Youth Club

Fun Run Day
For several years the Youth Club in together with Broadford Primary School PTA, and Broardford Village Hall Committee have organised a Fun Run Day.
The 5k & 10k take a route from the village hall heading out of Broadford along the Torrin road and use the network of walking paths. On the Playing field we run races for the younger children and other activities such as beat the goalie, bouncy castles and paintballing. In the evening the Hall Committee run a family Ceilidh. We have plans to hold the event again in 2010.

Trips
Each year the club tries to take our members away from the island for a week away. We tend to have a very active trip with outdoor activities being the main attraction. We have been to Perthshire several times for paintballing, go karting, and last year we went to PGL outdoor centre in Dalguise. Here we took 24 youth to the centre were they had the chance to discover their fear of heights, get very wet and muddy and learned team building skills in the activities. In 2010 we hope to raise enough funds to ensure another trip for our members.

Annual Youth Highland Competitions

Each year the Broadford Youth Club participates in the annual Youth Highland Regional competitions. For the past five years Skye & Lochalsh Youth groups have won the Regional Overall Award. Last year (2009) Broadford Youth Club was very successful: Football, our senior team won their event, a much prized achievement. Well done! Badminton: Morag Miller won the senior girls competition. Table tennis: John Mackinnon for the past several years has won his title showing some great skill in the game. Pool: Calum Morrison managed to defeat the very skilled players of Inverness.
