John Muir Trust

The John Muir Trust is a conservation body committed to wild places.  It owns 3 estates on the Isle of Skye (Strathaird, Torrin and Sconser) totaling 12,100 ha. Their aim is to maintain, and in some cases, improve the near natural character of the land. Throughout the estates a programme of vegetation monitoring has been taking place to bring overgrazed areas back to favourable condition, and over the last 12 years in Strathaird, non-native conifers are being replaced with natural broadleaves to aid bio-diversity.

Skye & Lochalsh Environment Forum           

The Skye & Lochalsh Environment Forum is a partnership of groups with an interest in the well-being of biodiversity and landscape in the West Highlands of Scotland. Its objectives are to promote and enhance conservation, awareness and welfare of biological diversity for the benefit of present and future generations. Anyone supportive of the groups aims will receive a warm welcome to membership and everyone with any viewpoint is invited to attend their occasional general meetings. Both are free of charge.

Skye Agricultural Society      

The society organises and runs the Skye Agricultural Show which is held on the George V Field in Portree at the beginning of August each year. The show features a range of activities including the judging of livestock, pipe band, dancing, music and on-field events.

Viewfield Garden Collective (VGC)

Viewfield Garden Collective is a therapeutic gardening project created principally for the benefit of adults recovering from mental health problems. It also supports other disadvantaged people. The garden itself provides a safe, nurturing environment which is supervised by appropriate volunteers. Viewfield Garden is located in Portree but the group is also interested in working with other gardening and path projects with similar aims and are currently working in partnership with the master composting scheme.

Feisean Nan Gaidheal                  

Feisean nan Gaidheal is an independent national association of tuition-based local festivals known as Feisean (singular Feis).  Feisean are designed to teach young people in a fun, safe environment about Gaelic cluture and language.  The aim of the organsiation is to make Gaelic Arts, Language and Culture more accessible and more widely appreciated through the support and development of community-based tuition Feisean, primarily for young people.

Inner Sound

 With members from Skye, Lochalsh and as far away as Inverness this group which rehearses in Breakish on Tuesday evenings has members with ages ranging from 7 to 70+.  The musical director is Ann Lampard ARCM. hon ARAM and the repertoire is extremely varied.  The group gives concerts across the Island and on the mainland throughout the year and performs a Gilbert and Sullivan opera in the summer.  There is no audition to join.

The Isle of Skye Accordion & Fiddle Club promotes traditional Scottish music in Skye & Lochalsh. The club meets from October to May on the first Thursday of the month in the Royal Hotel Portree. They also hold a 3 day Accordion & Fiddle Festival at the end of May each year.

LOCHAN (Lochalsh Arts Network) is a voluntary organisation promoting the Arts in the Lochalsh area. As Members of Promoting Arts Network LOCHAN has access to and information about touring productions. This gives LOCHAN an opportunity to bring professional high quality music, drama and dance to the Lochalsh area.  They also organise workshops and events with local schools, including the Centre of Excellence for Traditional Music at Plockton High School.

We exist to promote and participate in Community Drama in Skye and each year in February we take part in the One Act Drama Festival. SkyeDance was set up in 2004 with the aim of improving access for all to participate in dance in Skye and Lochalsh. It has built up an excellent reputation for its work & is considered an exemplar for dance development at community level. Portree Nursery is a 45 place day nursery which provides childcare and education. The nursery opened in 1993 after a group of parents raised funds to provide a suitable venue for the local playgroup. The nursery has grown from strength to strength and is a valuable asset for the local community.

Applecross Community Company

Community company formed under the Land Reform Act in 2008 owns and manages the filling station in Applecross.  Community company formed under the Land Reform Act in 2008 owns the filling station in Applecross.  They are currently progressing a community owned micro hydro scheme to planning permission stage with the aid of a Climate Challenge Fund grant. A full-time local development officer has recently been employed, funded by HIE and LEADER.

The Company’s objectives are to:

Camuscross & Duisdale Initiative

The company was set up in Dec 2008 and its Area of Benefit covers Camuscross, Duisdale and Isle Ornsay in Sleat. It is working on a number of projects for community benefit such as a hydro scheme using a community owned reservoir, footpaths and heritage interpretation, affordable house sites and a shop-café. It also organises community events such as the annual Crofters Olympics and a New Year Dance.

Raasay House Community Company

Community Company (formed under the Land Reform Act) owning Raasay House and its policies. The board are working with HIE to rebuild the house after the fire of January 2009 when most of the house -then approaching the end of a £3.5 million renovation - was destroyed. The house will be rented to Raasay Outdoor Centre once complete and the rent earned will be invested in other property owned i.e. the walled garden, woodlands etc.

Sleat Community Trust

Sleat is one of the fastest growing rural areas of Scotland. The Trust was created in 2004 when a proposal for a wind-farm was put forward, it never happened so the Trust set out to create a Sustainable Sleat through projects that would retain necessary services and meet the aspirations of the residents, while maintaining a high quality of the environment. Over 70% of the community are members, supporting a wide variety of projects. Projects include carbon reduction, recycling, bicycling, fuel sales, post office, garage, bat protection, mink removal, susidised taxis, garden equpment, community gardens, vegetable growing, wind turbine, community forest and lots more.

Struan Community Trust

Struan Community Trust was set up in 2009 to manage and distribute annual payments received from Vattenfall Wind Farm Company.  This community benefit fund is available for projects that provide services in the community and application forms are available from the Secretary.  Trustees meet quarterly to discuss applications.

Urras Baile Fhlodaigearraidh (Flodigarry Township Trust)

In 2009 Flodigarry commemorated the centenary of Flodigarry Farm being split into crofts. A charitable trust was set up with the aims of community development, the advancement of the local culture, heritage and the arts, including our Gaelic heritage and the advancement of environmental protection and improvement as the community see fit. At present the Trust is looking into the possibility of a Heritage Centre for the Trotternish area, located in Flodigarry.  Funding has been secured from Big Lottery Investing in Ideas to carry out a feasibility study.  Two week long Gaelic courses are run in conjunction with Sabhal Mor Ostaig each year.

The Agnes Macleod Memorial Fund 

The Agnes Macleod Memorial Fund offers small grants to women of advanced age, resident in Scotland, who were either born Macleod or whose mothers were born Macleod and who, by reason of sickness or limited means, are suffering hardship.  The monies available are severely restricted and the intention is to assist in cases where the benefits available from the State are either not sufficient or not appropriate.  Applications should be made to the Secretary.

Skye & Lochalsh Council on Alcohol  

Skye & Lochalsh Council on Alcohol (SLCA ) offers free counseling service to those who have substance misuse issues.  This service is also available to those people in the area who are living with someone who is misusing alcohol and/or drugs.  They have counsellors trained to offer this service to youngsters under the age of 18 and have an alcohol awareness project with the twenty-two schools in the area starting at Primary 7.  They also offer training courses under the Servewise banner for licensees, bar staff and shop workers as a requirement of the Licensing Scotland Act.

Skye & Lochalsh Drug & Alcohol Forum (SLDAF) provides a co-ordinated network for local agencies and individuals with an interest or remit for substance mis-use. Skye Cancer Care

Am Bata  

Am Bata aims to preserve the boatbuilding heritage of the North West by providing training in traditional wooden boatbuilding to school pupils and adult apprentices. Their oral history trainees carry out interviews with people who have experience of building or using local boats. They repair boats, build boats on commission and provide short courses in boat repair to adults. All income is reinvested in the project. Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund and Highland LEADER.

Portree Local History Society  

The society holds monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month from October to April.  Meetings usually take the format of an invited speaker giving a talk with illustrations but occasionally the group visits places of interest in the area such as the Archive Centre in Portree. Ceann Loch is dedicated to providing sports and community facilities for South Skye.  The current Board of Directors consists of 6 volunteers drawn from four locally based organisations.  However membership now extends to the general public.

The plan is for a full-sized grass shinty pitch, an all-weather training pitch and changing facilities.  Renewable technology and sustainability will be at the heart of the development, with biomass heating using fuel supplied by the local community owned forest.

Formed in 2007 by Niall Stewart, Schools Piping Instructor for South Skye and Lochalsh.  The band is made up of pupils who attend schools within South Skye and Lochalsh area and currently has 16 pipers and 4 drummers.  The band is self-funded and has performed at several local events since forming.

Lochalsh Youth Community Trust

Lochalsh Youth Community Trust is based at Kyle Village Hall.  The Trust runs a drop-in Youth Cafe for young people aged 11-18 years.  Away from school and home they are able to socialise in a safe, friendly, alcohol-free atmosphere and to access useful information and advice.  Facilities are available for sports, crafts, games, dancing, music and wildlife interests, all made possible thanks to the dedication and support of local volunteers.

Portree YMCA   

Portree YMCA is a Christian based organisation working to support young people of all faiths and none.  Located in the Old Library, Bayfield Lane in Portree they have a drop-in cafe facility with activities chosen and run by the young people, led by volunteers.  They employ a youth worker to develop programmes that meet the identified need of the young people in the community.  Membership is open to everyone, young and old.

Scouts Scotland

Scouting gives young people, aged 6-25, the opportunity to participate in activities which help them to have fun, make new friends and learn new skills.  Scouting has 5 sections - Beavers 6-8 years, Cubs 8-10½ years, Scouts 10½-14 years, Explorers 14-18 years and Network 18-25 years.  They are also always looking for keen new leaders to help provide a balanced programme.
